Review of Layer Cake (2004) by Rika O — 11 Nov 2011
I didn't know what to think of this movie. I actually saw half of it before, but got really tired and decided to not watch the rest. There's a lot going on and so many names being dropped around that I couldn't tell what was going on.
It didn't help that some of the actors had really thick British accents that were really hard to understand. With my second viewing, however, I was able to make it through the whole thing and enjoy it.
The movie basically revolves around this guy who's in the drug dealing business. Things are going smoothly for him, and he plans on leaving the biz, but then the shit hits the fan and everything gets all messed up.
My main problem with this movie is that it felt so full of itself. All the dialogue and the action just screamed at you they were trying to look cool. Plus, the characters were so distant, one-dimensional, and unsympathetic.
Anyway, if you can get past all that, you'll find a decently enjoyable film. This movie is just one of those movies that had me swinging back and forth from loving to hating it. I actually never realized till the end that we never found out the main character's name (and I'm not sure whether I can attribute that to finding the movie engaging or me not caring about the character himself).
If you like the movie Snatch, I'd say you'll probably like this film too (although I think Snatch is a whole lot better).
