Review of Layer Cake (2004) by Fred V — 11 Jan 2012
The funny thing about this film was that for the longest time I was thinking it seemed so much like a Guy Ritchie film. When I finally saw that it was directed by Matthew Vaughn, who was a producer on Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Snatch, it suddenly all made sense.
This film is so much smarter than any of Ritchie's works though. Firstly, the film feels big, but not too stylised or too gritty. Secondly, the cast are great, with solid performances by Craig, Kenneth Cranham, and Sir Michael Gambon.
You're lead to believe the film ends several times, but it carries on to eventually give you a very surprising ending. With all the twists of a Ritchie film, and the complex plot, this is a great British gangster film that has much more intelligence than any Richie flick, as it strips away a lot of the daft humour.
I highly recommend it.
