Review of Layer Cake (2004) by Faiz D — 06 Jun 2012
A watchable British gangster film and TBH only of more interest now if only to see why the Broccoli's hired Craig to be Bond.
I honestly thought this was a Guy Richie film by the style, you know the comedy gangsters, serious ones and Italian job style ambiguous ending. To find out it wasn't made it even stranger as I don't like Guy's style and I think the director could have made a better fist of this if he'd gone for a more straight style.
Anyway the long and short of it is that this film is trying to be clever and in doing so it appears strained and feels contrived. The whole 'Layer Cake' analogy given towards the end of the film was utter garbage and close to laughable. If the film had a more satisfying conclusion then I could have given it a higher score. As it is I was left unsatisfied by it and certainly won't be taking another slice.
