Review of Lay the Favorite (2012) by Amilcar A — 09 Dec 2012
This was a weird movie to say the least. I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be funny, sexy or serious. It really is neither and for the most part it's pointless and irrelevant. It's a shame since the cast is decent and Rebecca Hall is usually a pretty solid actress. Granted she's British and perhaps playing a low level employee for a low level gambler might not be her forte.
Lay the favorite is one of these movies that has no audience and will probably be a total commercial flop. It's too convoluted for teens, not interesting enough for smart adults and it doesn't even get deep enough into gambling to make it worth anyone's time.
Surprisingly though the movie is somewhat entertaining. Perhaps because one is consistently trying to figure things out and find the angle or what it's about.
Ultimately this one should be watched on cable and only if there is nothing else on. Not even Laura Prepon's boobs made this clunker work.
