Review of Laws of Attraction (2004) by Eden B — 01 May 2004
5/1/04.
With a loose script and flaky direction, you must depend on the two leads to provide any reward for your movie dollar. Luckily, the gorgeous pair of Pierce Brosnan and Julianne Moore barely save this romantic comedy from utter disaster. Both actors are charismatic and alluring unto themselves, but demonstrated surprising chemistry amongst questionable dialogue. The film thrives off the love-hate dynamic so popular in films and television. 'I act like I hate you, but really I'm in love.' As sickening and unappealing as this concept is to me, I could not help falling under Brosnan's and Moore's spell. Both actors displayed their comic range and comfort in the foreign genre as well as the best hair treatment and sophisticated garb I've ever seen--especially on a divorce lawyer. My attraction to Brosnan aside, the film has few redeemable qualties. There are only a couple laughs. I don't exactly subscribe to its message or am really sure what it was. Mostly you feel frustration with the characeters and their neuroses. Another disappointing addition was Parker Posey's role as a flamboyant, youthful designer desiring a divorce from her cheating rocker husband. Posey didn't steal the show as she normally does with this screeching, headache of a character. Too bad too, since this show could have used some stealing.
