Review of Lawrence of Arabia (1962) by Karan S — 16 Dec 2012
This is what movies should aspire to be. This is a movie that makes me aspire to become involved in the motion picture business. This is an example about how a movie can be huge in scope but full of emotional depth at the same time.
The powerful acting, especially by Peter O'Toole, grounds this movie in reality so well that it seems as though you are watching a documentary. Of course events and maybe some characterizations are overly dramatic or romanticized, but those ideas didn't cross my mind.
I became lost in the desert. The beautiful cinematography is immense and enchanting. It sets a standard for other cinematographers to follow because, I believe, it is the best shot film I have ever seen.
I love this movie. It did deserve Best Picture, but Peter O'Toole was robbed for Best Actor. Don't get me wrong, Gregory Peck was great as Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird" but he has acted in a similar way in most of his other movies.
Atticus Finch was not a diverse character because he couldn't be. He had to be a strong, moral compass for others. However, the character of T.E Lawrence required a huge range of emotional depth because of his experience of "going native.
" I think Peter O' Toole had the harder acting job and had a much larger impact of the story. He was irreplaceable to "Lawrence of Arabia." Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch is irreplaceable to "To Kill a Mockingbird" but less so than Peter O' Toole to "Lawrence of Arabia.
" Not to degrade Gregory Peck (because he was great in To Kill a Mockingbird), but Peter O' Toole should have won the Oscar for acting that year. But, I recommend this movie to anyone, especially those who love movies and want to be in the business one day.
It is a must see.
