Wikipedia: An epic is a genre of film that emphasizes human drama on a grand scale, and that's the perfect description of David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia. The mighty endless desert that the we who don't live there finds trulley amazing, all the marvelous pictures, the best cinematography.
It's amazing how David Lean was able to make such a masterpiece. most of all we must not forget the actors like Alec Guinnes, Anthony Quinn, Omar Sharif and most of all the young Peter O'Toole is one of the best preformances of all time as the anti-hero, half-god T.
