Review of Lawrence of Arabia (1962) by Simon H — 06 Jun 2014
Lawrence of Arabia achieves many things within its 3 hour plus running length. It's got a well written script and good direction. The famous theme is found with a fitting score provided. The characters have also been successfully cast. Whilst Peter O'Toole gets the most acclaim for his role, it should not go without forgetting Omar Sharif who portrays someone as interesting as O'Toole's T.E. Lawrence. As well as the dialogue, both stars are exceptionally good at showing their feelings through their facial expressions. As the film progresses, you can really work out what is going on within Lawrence's mind and the struggles he encounters.
However, all what is written above is not what caught my interest. The cinematography award couldn't have gone to a better film that year. Whether it's desert or building, it is beautiful to watch. For a film made it in the early 60's, it is quite something to see so much of the natural Earth on show. The picture is shot in a way that gives you a real sense of how it was to travel under the hot sun, and at times makes you want to be there. Lawrence of Arabia isn't just a film, it's a journey across the world.
