Review of Lawrence of Arabia (1962) by Youk T — 27 Nov 2014
This movie is about WW? in the Middle East and one young major ,T.E Lawrence, and it was directed by David Lean. He and the movie received Academy award in 1963. Also, Irish actor Peter O'Toole played T. E. Lawrence in the movie and he received his first Academy Award nomination. In this movie, we can see not only Lawrence's gentle attitude toward Arabs but also self-doubt until in the end. So I guess this is one of the most interesting movies about the Arabs WW?,and as a biography.
In the beginning of the movie, you will see the funeral of Lawrence and he is evaluated as both a great and a rude man by attendants and main act of the film starts off with his senior's recollections.
Lawrence was a commander, who was tasked with providing assistance to the Arabs in their battle against the Turks.
He was British but had an idea to establish the Arab's own country, so he started gathering tribes in the area and organizing the military. As a result, Lawrence and the Arab army could succeed in some operations. Finally, he occupied Damascus and held meeting of many tribes. But what makes us regretful is Lawrence's cruel act when he killed soldiers who had surrendered and he seemed to be possessed by his own ambitions.
After the war, the U.K and France tried to negotiate with the Arabs about the territory, seeking benefits, so his ambition failed.
Among the Arab tribes, Lawrence wore same clothes as them and also behaved as they did. Furthermore, we can see he did not discriminate against them and seemed to put himself in Arabs shoes. That would be why he was accepted in the Arab society. But, also we can see his agony because of the difference between reality and his ideal.
