Review of Lawrence of Arabia (1962) by Nik M — 11 May 2016
Today, the idea of spectacle is whatever is loud, bombastic, effects-driven, and star-studded. Spectacle is buried in emotionless acting, plotless and uninteresting stories, and one huge heap of marketing rubbish.
Spectacle, in the eyes of David Lean, executed through little to non-existent close-ups, with sweeping cinematography of vast landscapes...these all are the language to his storytelling method. The self-worshipping Lawrence, performed by Peter O'Toole's gripping output, is a fascinating and memorable character.
A war hero, an anti-hero, a philosopher, an inquisitor, an initiator, an ambitious fool. The film could not be lauded enough as the ruling epic of epic cinema.
