Review of Lawrence of Arabia (1962) by Sargunan I — 15 Sep 2010
I can understand why this movie was such a hit in its day...the sweeping scenes of the desert coupled with the warring Arabs on horses makes for beautiful art on the silver screen...The first half of this film is almost perfect.
..Lawrence gets sent on a mission which seems simple at first, but gets more and more complicated as he seems to have an innate love for all things Arab and a desire to find a solution suitable to all parties - ah, the exuberance and positivity of youth.
..A key scene for me was the saving of Gasim when he goes missing in the desert, only for lawrence to kill him with his own hands later on...Omar Shariff's character grows as the film progresses whilst Lawrence seems to suffer from the harsh reality of war and personal violation and retreats from being a leader.
..It is at this point where the film slows down quite considerably...But on the whole, it is a brilliantly made movie...Having read his book, I sense a few missing parts but hey, how often does the movie outdo the book?.
