Review of Lawrence of Arabia (1962) by John H — 23 Jun 2017
One of the greatest films of all time, and certainly one of the great spectacles. Lean's desert masterpiece is absolutely enthralling, with cinematography, editing, and score all combining to raise the goosebumps.
But it is much more than scale, with history, politics, alienation and the uneasy call of destiny woven into an unforgettable tapestry. Peter O'Toole's Lawrence is one of the great film characters, an absolute mess of a man finding his purpose as messianic leader and unwilling puppet.
At once a grand, sweeping epic and a keen, insightful character study, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA is both human and huge, and contains everything that a film can be.
