Review of Laurence Anyways (2012) by Alex S — 21 May 2012
There is a poetic vibe to some movies that makes them less realistic in a (very narrow) sense but allows them to embody more feelings. "Laurence Anyways" is a piece that, like "The Tree of Life" (Terrence Malick) relies strongly on those poetic feelings that puts forward the grace and beauty of something mostly regarded as ugly and "unnatural", bringing forth the naturalistic and beautiful nature of trans-sexuality.
It is original, mature, musically transporting and most of all: it innovates. The acting is incredibly strong and rushes through the heart of those who can pass the uneasy feeling usually coming with the subject of trans-sexuality.
A "special" movie in all the positive meanings of "special" that demystifies a subject that was in Quebec, often kept for underground theater pieces. Magnificent camera work; shots for those who saw them all but many great new ones.
To see with an open mind, for this movie does not have the pretension to try to "teach" you something: it says "look where I am at. Look what I've discovered so far". I won't say more: this is a movie to see.
It's a revolt... no, a revolution! ;).
