Review of Late Spring (2014) by Ashley C — 24 Jan 2009
I found myself getting more out of the technical aspects of this one than the story itself - the way certain shots were framed, various inserts and transitions and so forth. I liked the sudden shift to a first-person perspective in the gossip scene, followed impishly by a medium-long shot of one character whispering to the other, thus leaving the audience out of the loop, and I appreciated the attention to ritualistic detail in the opening sequence and the Noh theatre scene.
But the father-daughter dynamic was simply too foreign for me to relate to, and while the movie certainly didn't drag, it didn't quite engage me either.
