Review of L'Atalante (1934) by Alexandre R — 24 Sep 2009
A simple story of love and estrangement on a French barge, vaguely reminiscent of Sunrise, but really unlike any other film Iâ??ve seen. A curious mixture of fancy and realism with strikingly modern compositions and use of locations.
The performances are delightful, particularly Michel Simonâ??s Pere Jules, who seems to be utterly unaware of the camera in a way that belies the filmâ??s year of production. Probably one for the film buffs, but very deserving of your time and attention.
