Review of Last Vegas (2013) by Roy Y — 24 Jan 2014
The phrase "never judge a book by its cover" gets thrown around a lot these days, but anybody expecting Jon Turteltaub's boyish comedy to be a kind of Hangover re-run with a bunch of fading stars might be pleasantly surprised by this one. Admittedly, this ain't no masterpiece and the premise does rely primarily on one gag: that these guys are a bit past it. However, Kline and Freeman genuinely deliver plenty of well-timed one-liners here, and the whole cast are consistently entertaining to watch.
The plotting is predictable and some gags feel a little stuffed-in, but this is a whole different beast to The Hangover and, not only are the characters deep and developed enough for the film's sentimental side to work but, for the most part, the whole thing is actually one hell of a lot of fun. Put it this way, there are plenty of worse ways to spend a family Sunday afternoon.
