Review of Last Train Home (2009) by Shubh P — 25 Mar 2011
"Last Train Home" is a fascinating documentary by Chinese director Lixin Fan. A husband and wife from the country must move more than 1200 miles to the city to find jobs that pay. The couple can only return home at the Chinese New Year when 130M other Chinese are doing the same.
During such a migration home, the couple discovers that their children have grown bitter and resentful at the 13Y separation. So much so that their daughter quits school and leaves the country herself, leaving her parents devastated and anxious.
A poignant portrait of a family trying to stay together. Highly recommended for documentary fans. Good for anyone who doesn't mind reading their movies.
