One must applaud Bertolucci and his actors Brando and Schneider for putting everything into making such a daring and controversial film. The depictions of sex and the role that deviancy which are portrayed in the film are so taboo that even through present society they are much to taboo to handle.

Still, just because a film deals with these types of themes does not immediately make it good or add intrinsic value. The film is bloated and pretentious and uses it's value as a torch to seem important.

The actors give 100% and both give amazing performances. The direction is spotty though and that combined with the overindulgence mentioned earlier just bring the film down. This film wants to be important, a standard bearer yet fails in doing so.
