The characters were so mysterious, and the perception of them is really ambiguous to the viewer (is Maria Schneider's character a victim or simply a viewer of a horrible spectacle?), but Brando's performance here was uncanny.

Maria Schneider, understandably, may have been unfamiliar with her role, as it contains depth that only someone older would truly understand, but her misunderstanding brings out the power in her performance.

The plot was fairly straightforward, but the actors build on it, making it an awesome cinematic experience, and one that should surely not be missed.
