Never before have I seen a Bruce Willis film so utterly lifeless. The characters are dull, the atmosphere is dull, even the action is dull and uninteresting.

It's too bad, too, because it's a good story -- after all, it's already been made into two good films (Yojimbo & Fistful of Dollars), and Willis is certainly well cast. But even the showdown between Willis and Walken isn't interesting. How do you have Bruce Willis and Christopher Walken facing each other in a duel and not make it interesting? But somehow the usually talented Walter Hill pulls it off. What a bust.

The opening gunfight, however, stands completely apart from the rest of the film -- a explosive confrontation with all the style, dark humor, and propulsive energy that the rest of the film so completely lacks.
