Review of Last Life in the Universe (2003) by Luis M — 03 Jan 2010
Magical story of alienation and cross-cultural bonding set in Bangkok and told through an intoxicating blend of Thai, Japanese, and English dialogue. The photography is visual poetry that, combined with an ethereal soundtrack and time-shifting edits, creates a dreamlike mood that lets the story float ambiguously between memory and fantasy.
Ratanaruang is an emerging force in independent film and Yoshikiyo is a master of his genre.
