Rodrigo Garcia presents a compelling, thoughtful and human creative reflection on the pre-ministry of Jesus. Ewan McGregor turns in a fine performance that places emphasis on Jesus the man, and Lubezki's cinematography dwells on the beauty and harshness of nature.

The film's portrayal of Satan touches on a few unique ideas on his hatred of God (a despisal of the cyclical nature of Creation is particularly intriguing) and Garcia was right that this is, at its core, a simple story of the relationships of fathers to sons.

It's occasionally a bit overbearingly serious (the minimalism bites here, as the film could've used a bit more joy to contrast) but overall it's a beautiful reflection not only on Jesus and humanity, but the film contains an unexpected but biting critique of modern man.
