Review of Last Days (2014) by James J — 09 Jun 2008
You know the type of movie that starts out really slow, but you expect it to get better 20 minutes into it? Well, 1 hour and 15 minutes into the movie I realized this wasn't going anywhere. Really, this is a very unique film.
The entire films seems dead, distant, out of touch, - which is probably what Van Sant was going for, but it's not enjoyable. There is absolutely no character development, characters are here and there doing this and that but Blake (based on Kurt Cobain) is the star and he just piddles around his home and neighborhood in a drug-induced state.
This film is so existential, so matter of fact. There are several scenes where there will be 4 minutes gone by without a cut, and during such scenes you stare at a house slowly panning out, watch Blake mumble to a person about yellow pages, and even a scene where you watch an entire music video on a tv screen, etc.
Ironically, the only time this film feels alive is at the very end, and that lasts for about 30 seconds.
