Review of Last Days (2004) by Josh H — 31 Oct 2007
â??Death by misadventureâ?? in the vein of Chung Ling Soo or death by self-destruction? That was the only question this film raised that I had any interest in. Impossible to separate Blake from Kurt Cobain in this quasi biopic. This film seems somewhat needless to me, given that Cobain himself gave us a much better glimpse into his last days. Gus Van Santâ??s â??Elephantâ?? was much better.
The extremely long shots were the highlight. I donâ??t really care if a film has a traditional narrative or not, but this was frustrating to me. With such little dialogue, something else must drive the film, and there was just nothing there. Michael Pitt has a nice song in the movie. I donâ??t think I could sit around and discuss this film. Not entertaining or thought provoking really. I will give Van Sant credit for following his conviction and carrying out his vision with an unusual style. I just wasnâ??t feeling it.
