Review of Last Days (2004) by Tristan G — 31 Oct 2007
Most people who see this will probably not like it simply because nothing much happens in it. However, I loved it. The reason why is because it creates a sense of isolation and loneliness better than I've ever seen done with any other film.
LAST DAYS is about the final days of Nirvana front man, Kurt Cobain, and his final hours that he was alive for. The film shows him as depressed, dizzy, hurt, and isolated, and yet somehow Gus Van Sant is able to take a similar approach that he took with ELEPHANT and create a kind of conflicted and sustained sort of universe that feels just right in giving the audience what the guy was feeling.
There are a few heart wrenching scenes here and there, but for the most part the film follows around Kurt and the people living at his house and the sorts of things they do with their lives. It's haunting, but it really worked on me for some reason.
See it for Michael Pitt's strange performance as the mumbling superstar.
