Review of Last Days (2004) by Ryan K — 09 Nov 2008
The closing installment to Van Sant's "Death Trilogy" is yet another exploration of alienation and depression, although this time the effects are brought on by celebrity status and inspired by the last days of Kurt Cobain.
While I didn't like Last Days as much as Gerry or Elephant, there's still alot to like about the piece, especially the tone and Michael Pitt's introverted performance, and the bizarre cameo by Ricky Jay was a nice touch.
Perhaps the reason this wasn't as effective for me as the other Van Sant death films is I've never much been a fan of Nirvana nor did Cobain's suicide affect me in any way. Regardless, Last Days is still a fine film, although not the appropriate closer I had hoped for to the "Death Trilogy.
