Review of Last Day of Freedom (2015) by Rostek P — 03 Feb 2016
This is the first Oscar-nominated documentary short. It's an animated documentary told by the brother of Manny Babbit - a mentally ill Vietnam veteran who was executed by the state of California. Animation was chosen as a medium for its fragmentary opportunities but it works at its best in the scene, in which Manny's brother Bill comes to the police to report.
The heavy steps and the tragic irony of the voice over make the scene especially powerful. In the end, the animation does not contribute much, but it's a powerful story and a story that made me really angry.
