Review of Last Chance Harvey (2008) by David Z — 18 Jul 2009
Let it be said that there is at least one romcom out there that doesn't make me want to hurl. You lovers of romance should have flocked to this one instead of giving your money over to Sandra Bullock for the dreck that "The Proposal" undoubtedly was.
Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson are expected to be brilliant but they really outdo themselves in this quiet, middle-aged love story. Hoffman plays the Charlie Brown/Job character to a t and Emma Thompson's thought process is always discernable without ever becoming overt.
If the film wraps up a little too tidely and if a side story concerning a potential murderer nextdoor never really takes off, so be it. These are characters you'll care about (and London looks simply magnificent here.
).
