Review of Last Chance Harvey (2008) by Andrew K — 20 Jun 2009
Hoffman and Thompson are guaranteed to put in good performances, but they are let down by unendearing characters. They come across as self-absorbed and mawkish, so that the movie ends with the viewer feeling that they are together simply because they're too wrapped up in their own needs to consider what the other's needs are.
And their families? To be honest, if I was Harvey and had a family who treated me as mostly an inconvenience like that I wouldn't even bother turning up for the wedding.
Knowing London, they are in desperate need of a decent GPS to find their way around, judging from their haphazard walking journeys across the capital. This at least kept me well enough entertained for my wife to think I was watching a comedy.
