Review of Last Chance Harvey (2008) by Courtney T — 04 Oct 2009
I wanted to like this movie so much. Unfortunately, it was terrible. Harvey is supposed to be this awkward loser guy, but honestly, the people around were the awkward ones. His daughter had no personality, his ex-wife was over-the-top mean (what was with Kathy Baker's hair? She looked like an 80's pop singer reject) and his boss was a jerk. And don't get me started about Emma Thompson's character. Our heroine spinster boasts a demeaning job, a pointless neurotic mother and. . .issues. Issues! The movie uses her issues to explain why she's not married, which is crap.
So anyway, these two characters meet, they have no chemistry, but since they're apparently so awkward in their own skin, they are able to appreciate the other's uncomfortable grins and stilted conversation. Ugh! If you're a fellow spinster like me, you'll loathe this movie. If you have half a brain and just partial vision, you will also NOT enjoy this movie. Boo.
