Review of Last Action Hero (1993) by Jason F — 18 Jul 2009
Arnold playing himself playing a fictional action movie star who is Arnold in the real world. Blows my mind apart.
It takes every action movie cliche, uses them, talks about them, analyzes them (er, kind of) all the while commenting on peoples fantasies about wanting life to "be like the movies". This movie is oddly very deep in it's philosophy (although the philosophy is nonsense) and for that I respect this film.
Now, ok, yeah, the little kid is annoying as shit and the film drags the hell on in the middle. But as much as I tried to agree with the critics, this film being "a cliche boring action film", I can not... because that's the friggin' point. And it's an awesome point.
Basically this is "Being Arnold Schwarzenegger" not directed by Spike Jones... instead directed by McTiernan, who brought us Die Hard... and Rollerball... ehhem... well, Die Hard was good. And so is Last Action Hero.
