Review of Last Action Hero (1993) by Mike H — 23 Jul 2011
A pile of genres meets a blender in Last Action Hero. Unfortunately you don't get the same satisfaction when you replace Arnold-screaming-and-killing-everything-action with buddy-comedy-parody-self-aware-Who-Framed-Roger-Rabbit-fantasy-nostalgia-action.
The production company all but completely assumed the movie was destined to become the highest grossing film of all time in 1993. It had the biggest action star, comedy, stuff for film buffs and intellectuals, a ton of money behind some solid effects, all the right stuff to make the film critics and the common moviegoers rave about it -- but in the end it was clever to a fault, too much of a scientific formula, and lacked the foundation necessary to pull the audience in and let them care. The kid destroys half of the scenes, and trying to please the Arnold fans, the non Arnold fans, and the critics all at the same time makes for a screenplay that can't commit to any one direction.
That said, there are likable moments, enough even that the movie could be considered somewhat underrated, or maybe the negativity of the original critiques was simply inflated by the presumption that this was going to be the best movie ever made, but wasn't by a long shot.
