Review of Lars and the Real Girl (2007) by Alex M — 11 Mar 2013
I think what makes me love this film so much is the fact that the director and writer took this in every direction I wanted to go and avoided any pitfalls that an ordinary film would while handling this type of subject.
Ryan Gosling delivers a splendid performance, and the majority of the supporting cast delivers on an equal level - Emily Mortimer, Paul Schneider, and Patricia Clarkson really gave their all to these roles, and it shows.
The characters are not only interesting, but are well developed - by the end of the film, I felt like I really knew each of them as well as I knew Lars. The script is sincere, even oftentimes hilarious, and the underlying message is never lost; for a film about a sex doll, Lars and the Real Girl tackles some deep issues, and there are numerous scenes that brim with emotion.
For the quirky movie it is, it does everything perfectly and takes all the right steps down to its final scene. Its subject matter might scare most people away, but take a chance - by the end of all, you might just care about the little sex doll.
