Review of Larry Crowne (2011) by Bob S — 06 Sep 2012
There is something sweet and desirable about the premise of a laid-off, divorced and middle-aged man heading to college in search of a job, but instead finding friendship, confidence and passion. Hanks not only stars, but directed this film and co-wrote the script with Vardalos.
I do wonder whether Vardalos had the majority of the influence on the script since the title character was presented unnaturally, as if from a woman's vantage point. Larry wasnâ(TM)t alone; his professor (played by Roberts), his scooter-buddy, and also the perpetual yard salesman living next-door each appeared overly exaggerated.
Consequently, my emotional attachment to the story was tempered. Mbatha-Raw was a pleasant surprise playing Larryâ(TM)s scooter-buddy and fellow co-ed in her first feature film.
