Review of Lantana (2001) by Jj M — 09 Sep 2011
This is a passable drama that follows a series of intriguing inter-connected stories of middle-aged couples and flirts with themes of extra-marital affairs, masculinity, familial loss and murder. It produces some quality efforts from it's largely Australian cast, and of course Barbara Hershey.
However unique and extraordinary it may seem in it's own country, I found that it never rose above mundanity. That was unfortunate because although it's concept was spot on, it never kicked up enough of a fuss and never fully challanged me head-on and I think that it's subject matter was crying out for it.
II don't know, maybe it has something to do with Australian sentimentalities and the country's ethos of playing everything so bloody safe!
