Review of Land of the Dead (2005) by Jared A — 18 Oct 2009
George Romero's fourth descent into a world overrn by the living dead is a difficult one to grasp. The social element is still very much alive. Romero paints the portrait of a society not unlike our own, where the upper class simply ignore the biggest problems while the lower class kill each other for pennies.
Dennis Hopper brings the element of Psychopath into the picture in a way no one else could. Hopper plays the tyrannic leader of the only remaining human city, concerned more with champagne than the well being of those who deliver it to him in his picturesque fortress.
While perhaps the most important message to be captured in the series, 'Land of the Dead' falls short in its ability to scare; an element that was so important in the other entries. Definitely one of the better 21st century zombie movies, but still not enough to put its predecessors to shame.
