Review of Land of the Dead (2005) by Ryan M — 21 May 2011
This was a pretty decent zombie flick, although I have to question the option of applying some rationality to the zombies themselves. It kind of makes them into just another semi-sentient predator, (even going so far as to allude to a semblance of morality or herd-protection) that depletes the idea of a zombie in the first place.
Lesson to zombie-film script writers: zombies are interesting because of their juggernaut / drone status, don't experiment with giving them any semblance of rationality / morality, as this will turn them into the sort of monster protagonist that we already see plenty of.
With that criticism out of the way, this has enough to please most zombie fans, but is hardly a classic of the genre. Simon Baker is good, as was John Leguizamo and of course, Dennis Hopper (was this one of his last flicks?), and Land of the Dead almost shows traces of the sort of epic / global zombie conflict film that I'm waiting for (re: WWZ, 28 Months Later).
..but it looks like i'll have to wait a while longer.
