Review of Land of the Dead (2005) by Mallory M — 28 Oct 2010
After the success of the Dawn of the Dead remake, Universal brought in the master himself to make another zombie flick and with mixed results. Romero had a bigger budget and even some name actors but, in working for a big studio he had to sacrifice releasing without a rating, and thus the gore, and the film is too glossy to feel like one of his original series.
The film continues in the Romero timeline, with a walled city fortress battling the dead outside and equally bad ruling class inside. While there is still plenty to enjoy for fans, the notion that these people are used to having the walking dead as neighbors, takes away the threat.
If the characters aren't afraid, why should we be? The director's cut added back some gore and the climatic siege is fun but, the film seems more like an episode of a show then a complete movie.
.. and that's because Universal was planning for Romero to make a new trilogy but, his dissatisfaction with working for a big studio, had him return to his low budget independent roots for the following zombie film.
