Review of Land of the Dead (2005) by C C B — 03 Apr 2011
I saw this movie after watching the pleasant "Dawn of the Dead" and also positive reviews from critics. However, I was expecting the same surprise throughout the whole movie, waiting for something to really attract me to the movie, and the only thing that came out was the reasoning they gave to zombies, they are not stupid, walking creatures but in this movie they get a leader and start acting on a strategy as a whole.. The feudal control that trapped the rich to the building whereas leaving the poor ordinary people into streets was a nice surprise too, with a reference to corruption and how people can take advantage of disasters and disadvantages from others and chaotic situations.. Nevertheless, there were way too much close-ups to the zombies and half of the movie was seeing the "undead" rip off flesh and all that stuff.. At the end, the viewer gets a "So what?" expression, and Romero pushes us to feel "pity" for these creatures somehow.. Well, this is extremely the opposite to the other "Dead" entries where it was all about survival.. You missed this Mr. Romero!
Finally, to the fans I recommend to watch the following movies in the following order: Dawn of the Dead, Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead. The remaining sequels/remakes do suck..
Overall: 4/10.
