Review of Land of the Dead (2005) by Harry W — 27 Dec 2014
Land of the Dead is better than most of the other recent zombie films I have seen. The plot, while using the same concept as DotD, feels very unique and interesting. The script is full of interesting Ideas and inventions, as well as some great characters.
Romero never makes the mistake of focusing to much on a specific character, or creating a ridiculous love interest for no reason at all like so many horror films do. He gives the film the satirical element of the others, but with a modern twist.
The zombie effects are a real spectacle. Hundreds of zombies in screen simultaneously, detailed zombie makeup that holds up better than anything I've seen this year (I'm writing this December 2014), and an insane amount of gore, guts, blood, decapitations and more.
My only beef is that the most of main characters don't get enough to do. I'm not going to go into it (y'know spoilers) but they seem to not spend much time in danger of the zombies. So Land of the Dead isn't quite as good as Romero's old stuff, but it's one of the best modern zombie films.
77/100.
