Review of Land and Freedom (1995) by Jonathan B — 19 Aug 2008
Ken Loach has been an inspirational film maker for me for as long as I can remember and its a suprise that I've only really got around to watching this properly (I have vague memories of watching this one drunken eve in the nineties and falling asleep).
Its a fantastic companion piece to Loach's more recent 'The Wind that Shakes the Barley' with similar themes being covered. It is also a fantastic introduction to the many complex and confusing political components of the conflict to any viewer not too familiar with the Spanish Civil War.
Fantastic performances and Ken Loaches long lens doco style is in full effect. Brilliant.
