Review of Lake of Fire (2006) by Fergal K — 20 Jan 2008
Uncompromising look at abortion that deserves to be seen by as many people as possible, regardless of political affiliation. It's a brave and at times punishing film that gives (more or less) equal time to extremists and moderates on both side of the debate.
Yet, despite much ugliness depicted on screen, the film is never less than sumptuous to look at, shot on 35mm and in rich B&W. It's unapologetically cinematic, and - despite some occasional lapses into pretension - manages to examine the issues in a remarkably balanced and even-handed way.
The last half an hour or so is some of the most harrowing footage you are ever likely to see. Highly recommended.
