Review of Lake Mungo (2009) by Al M — 20 Oct 2010
Lake Mungo could easily be compared to The Blair Witch Project or Paranormal Activity, but it creates its own horrific aesthetic outside of those films. Lake Mungo is not a first person film exactly. The characters generally don't run around with video cameras catching the action.
Instead, Lake Mungo is comprised of found video footage from various sources that is strung together with interviews to create the plot of the film. While Lake Mungo is not quite the startling, jump-out-of-your-seat found footage film like Paranormal Activity, it is still an unnerving, creepy film that slowly and methodically builds a disturbing vibe from its "realistic" images and ultimately questions the reality of found footage as evidence.
Smart, creepy, and especially good if watched in the dark by yourself, Lake Mungo will leave you watching out of the corner of your eye for hints of the paranormal you may have missed.
