Review of Lagerfeld Confidential (2007) by Ryan K — 04 Sep 2008
This doc feels raw and immediate (unlike Lagerfeld's own work which is the definition of refined and classic), oscillating between voyeuristic peeping (while Lagerfeld reads, looks out windows, tries on clothes, etc.
) and intimate glimpses into his life via interviews and soundbytes where Lagerfeld iconoclastically ruminates on the state of German culture, religion, his mother, sexuality, and what he wants to achieve in fashion.
Lagerfeld basks in his own eccentricities but shows himself to insightful, wry, circumspect, and far more intelligent than all of his peers, including the documentarian. With its short running-time (much of it spent on watching Lagerfeld draw, walk around, shoot models, and attend runway shows) this unconventional video-journal leaves you wanting to know more about Lagerfeld and his work and isn't that the mark of a good documentary?
