Review of Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001) by Denise H — 06 Feb 2010
1983...somewhere in central India during the British occupation. A village is facing drought and the British captain of the local fort makes a bet that the villages can't win a cricket match against his soldiers.
Classic tale of David vs Goliath but VERY well portrayed. A long movie...but necessary to build the tension and explain the complexities of the plot. Singing, dancing included with some excellent choreography thrown in.
Click on English subtitles so you understand it all as they switch back/forth between the native tongue and English. Aamir Khan is perfect in his leading role. Rachel Shelley was a bit sappy as a proper British lady but I think it was more to portray the societal regimen than because her acting was not up to par.
Found myself being pulled into the actual cricket match and was outraged at the racism displayed by the overpowering British. I highly recommend this move!
