This was my introduction to Bollywood films. It tries to be so many things and succeeds in being an entertaining 4 hours. It tries to be a sports film (even though the sport is cricket), it tries to be historical, it tries to be a serious film and lighthearted musical at the same time (just like all bollywood movies), it tries to be a Shakesperian romance, and it tries to be a social commentary (people from different castes have to work together).
