Review of Ladyhawke (1985) by Robert H — 10 Mar 2008
I really wanted to like this movie. Unfortunately, it has not aged well. The premise is wonderful. The 80s music and technicolour bright red uniforms on the soldiers aren't. The aged and darkened film stock make the film look depressingly bleak.
Worst of all, however, Rutger Hauer's character does not deserve his lady. Not only is he so hellbent on revenge and his own despair that he disregards hope, but he even plots to have his true love euthanised without her consent or knowledge, should anything happen to him.
How are we supposed to be glad to see them end up together if we know that he very nearly had her killed in her sleep? This should have been a wonderful, magical story. Instead, it leaves a sour aftertaste.
