Review of Ladyhawke (1985) by Tero H — 16 Oct 2012
Basically this is interesting and well made movie, although slightly boring. The middle-ages fantasy-themed adventure gets better after the first half. Only the first and last quarters of the film are interesting in my opinion, and all the aimless wandering about could be just cut out of the film: it would work well as 1,5h movie. More variation in the plot and more action would have helped the film. Nothing is wrong with the actors: Rutger Hauer, Matthew Broderick and the beautiful Michelle Pfeiffer are professionals and the movie is obviously directed well too. The story could have used more characters.
The movie soundtrack sounds peculiar: the movie has music only here-and-there, it begins and ends quite abruptly. It also sounds like some kind of electric hammond or organ. Occasionally the music sounds like modern pop or rock'n'roll, not altogether bad idea which would later be utilized in movies like 'A Knights Tale' in 2001. The sets are well done. The views at the mountains and nature are cool and the castles and forts resemble real buildings in the middle-ages. I have seen this movie twice.
An interesting romantic medieval adventure which definitely suffers from lack of action, lack of music and lack of variation.
