Review of Ladybird Ladybird (1994) by Sara C — 05 Aug 2007
This film is typical of Loach: working class protagonists fighting the middle class system. In Ladybird Ladybird, based on a true story, maggie (the central protagonist)is deemed an unfit mother by social services.
The film follows her struggle with the system as she tries to unite her family. One of Loach's strengths is his choice of actors. Throughout his film career, Loach has never forgotten his documentary roots and deliberately picks non-actors to take centre stage rather then established names.
This only adds to the 'realism' that we are seeing before us. Crissy Rock, a professional comedianne before Ladybird, gives a towerhouse performance as Maggie. At times the performances are so raw that, at times, makes it difficult to watch.
Loach's use of colour, lighting and camera angles all contribute to a documentary-style feel to the film. Loach is an amazing director, who is not afraid to critque the establishment or tell it like it actually was.
