Review of Lady Vengeance (2005) by Brock J — 30 Jul 2008
Easily the most artistic and cryptic of Park's Revenge Trilogy (Note none of the stories are related); Lady Vengeance shies away from graphic violence (Though there is plenty of graphic off-screen violence) in favor of a more psychological, cerebral examination of violence and revenge.
While a great film, this film is certainly not for everyone. Themes of child murder and abuse run rampant throughout much of the film, and some parts will no doubt disturb you greatly. Of course, this kind of horrible shock factor can be found in all of the films of this trilogy, but its focus on children may be a little intense for some audiences.
Overall though, it begs some very interesting questions about revenge and its effects. Though a very different film from "Oldboy" and "Sympathy", Lady Vengeance stands with these films; a perfect closing bang for an extremely intense, sometimes disturbing, but always intriguing trilogy.
